Managing challenges in bridge construction

Since 2017, the six-lane expansion of the A61 between the Rheinböllen junction and the Hunsrück service station has been underway and progressing.

Built in 1969 and with a height of 92 meters, the Tiefenbachtal Bridge is one of the highest bridges in Rhineland-Palatinate. Aged and in need of renovation, these bridges would no longer be able to safely withstand the projected traffic volume of up to 67,000 vehicles per day, about a quarter of which are trucks.

In this major project, Heitkamp Industrial Solutions GmbH is in charge of the construction of the two large valley bridges Tiefenbachtal and Pfädchensgraben. We have taken over the technical management of this project. For the Tiefenbachtal bridge, our scope of work is as follows:

Length: 367.00m – Concrete: 17,800m³ – Reinforcement: 3,290 tons

For the large bored piles with a diameter of 150cm with a length of about 1,030m, 120 tons of reinforcing bars and about 1,820m³ of concrete were used. In addition, a bored pile wall was constructed, consisting of bored piles with a diameter of 90cm and a length of 1,330m, having a reinforcement share of 90 tons and about 720m³ of concrete.

In the constructive cooperation with the work consortium, this project is an important milestone for the innovative infrastructure of our traffic arteries. The overall completion is planned for 2025 – our thanks go to our employees, who are managing this project for all of us.
